How Bad Are Bananas? is one of those books that leaves you staring into your cup of coffee, wondering what invisible impact it carries. 

It’s not about doing less – it’s about doing things smarter. With surprising comparisons and jaw-dropping carbon maths, Berners-Lee helps us to understand what really matters in the climate conversation. Spoiler: it’s not the banana.

What does CO₂ even mean?

CO₂ – carbon dioxide – is one of the major greenhouse gases driving climate change. It’s released when we burn fossil fuels like oil, gas or coal – and through the things we produce, consume and waste. 

To compare emissions from different sources, we use a standard measure called CO₂e – carbon dioxide equivalent – which includes other powerful gases like methane and nitrous oxide. The numbers, shown in grams (g), kilograms (kg) or tonnes (t), help us to comprehend the climate cost of each action. 

For reference: 

  • 1 g CO₂e ≈ 7 seconds of driving
  • 100 g CO₂e ≈ 1 km by car
  • 1 kg CO₂e ≈ 10 km by car or a medium steak
  • 1 t CO₂e ≈ an average European’s emissions in 1 month

Key points

How Bad Are Bananas? doesn’t overwhelm you with stats – it tells carbon stories in g, kg and tonnes. A tangible, readable way to rethink our everyday choices. 

Some things are as bad as you thought (beef, frequent flying). Others are worse. And the rest? Far more innocent than you’d imagine.

Here are the key takeaways that have stood out to us:

#1: Bananas aren’t that bad – but wasting them is. One banana has a surprisingly low footprint: around 110 g CO₂e – that’s about the same as a kilometre in a car or a cup of oat milk coffee. But throw it away, and that footprint becomes avoidable. Globally, food waste accounts for up to 10% of all emissions. 

#2: Buying new tech has a higher footprint than using it. A single smartphone generates 55-95 kg CO₂e during its production – the same as driving 400-700 km. Most of the footprint happens before you even switch it on. Keeping your phone for just one more year makes a measurable difference. 

#3: A simple t-shirt = 4 kg, jeans = 30+ kg CO₂e. A basic cotton T-shirt emits around 4 kg CO₂e. A pair of jeans? Due to water-hungry cotton, dyeing and global transport, over 30 kg CO₂e – about the same as a domestic flight. The carbon impact of the fashion industry is bigger than all international flights and shipping combined. 

#4: A text message? Nearly nothing. A Google search? Adds up fast. One SMS emits only 0.014 g CO₂e – practically nothing. But a single email with a large attachment? Around 50 g CO₂e – the same as driving 400 metres. Multiply that across your inbox, team and organisation, and it starts to matter. 

#5: Trains are greener – but not always. Yes, trains are generally more climate-friendly (and far safer) than cars. But if just two people are travelling together, driving an efficient car can have a lower footprint than taking a first-class train. 

#6: A bouquet a week? A tonne of trouble. A weekly bouquet of out-of-season, flown-in flowers can add up to 1.5 tonnes of CO₂e per year. Grown with artificial heat or flown across continents – either way, it’s bad news for the climate. 

#7: War is the most carbon-intensive human activity. Military operations and infrastructure have some of the highest emissions on the planet – yet they’re rarely discussed. It’s a sobering reminder that peace and sustainability are profoundly interconnected – and that a just, liveable future requires both.

If you see air-freight, avoid it. Vegan beats vegetarian for the climate. And when it comes to beef, lamb or hothouse-grown produce – think red flags, not green choices.

Summary

In his ground-breaking book “Doing Good Better”, MacAskill explains the concept of “Effective Altruism” and asks the question, “How can I make the biggest difference I can?” To answer this question he uses concepts we’ve hardly ever seen so far in the field of doing good: evidence, careful reasoning and a scientific approach. His search for truth shows that so far, many of us “just did good” without assessing if we chose the right investment = if we were using our resources in the most effective way. MacAskill also busts some myths about the concepts of green living, climate offsetting, fairtrade, etc., showing us in a fact-based and impartial way, that what we thought or were told was best for the word, in truth, isn’t.

Key Points

At MAp, we believe in the power and goodness of people. That was one reason why we developed our hotel sustainability platform: to empower hoteliers, consultants, students, business owners, etc. to do good. To make a difference. To make this Planet a more purposeful and hospitable place for all. However, the so-often overlooked challenge William MacAskill addresses in his book is: How can we ensure that, when we try to help others and do good, we do so as effectively as possible? Because the truth is: The best charities are hundreds of times more effective at improving lives than merely “good” charities. This means, by knowing the principles of effective altruism, we all can be hundreds of times more effective in creating positive impact for People and Planet.

Here are the 3 key take-aways you need to know:

#1: The effective altruist’s approach to making a difference consists of five key questions

There are five key questions you should ask yourselves when thinking like an effective altruist:

1. How many People benefit, and by how much?
This implies: we need to make fact-based decisions about how much benefit we can make by doing different charitable activities / supporting different charities.

2. Is this the most effective thing you can do?
Search for science-based evidence and do not go for “merely” very good programmes, if the very best ones are hundreds of times better. HERE is a great resource for identifying the best charities and non-profits.

3. Is this area neglected?
Your money makes the most difference when you invest in a neglected area vs. an area where a lot of funding already goes to. As an example, we could say that investing in malaria health programmes is more effective than in cancer research programmes.

4. What would have happened otherwise?
Looking at evidence, some programmes don’t do good, but cause harm over the long run. Or they don’t create as much impact as you would imagine. For example, this applies to the decisions you take when choosing a career: sometimes you can do good better when you donate money while working at a “normal” job vs. working at an NGO, which often is thought of as the best thing you could do.

5. What are the chances of success, and how good would success be? 
Some activities are effective not because they’re likely to make a difference, but because their impact is so great if they do make a difference. To illustrate this, MacAskill uses the example of climate change: “If it is happening and we don’t take action, millions of lives will be lost and the world economy will lose trillions of dollars. If climate change isn’t happening and we do take action, the costs are much lower. We would have wasted some amount of resources developing low-carbon technology and slowed economic progress a bit, but it wouldn’t, literally, be the end of the world.”

#2: The law of diminishing returns implies you focus on long-time tested activities

MacAskill defines the law of diminishing returns in his book as follows: “If we want to do as much good as we can, we’ve got to ask which cause to focus on. The law of diminishing returns provides a useful rule of thumb for comparing causes. If a specific area has already received a great deal of funding and attention, then we should expect it to be difficult for us to do a lot of good by devoting additional resources to that area. In contrast, within causes that are comparatively neglected, the most effective opportunities for doing good have probably not been taken.” MacAskill then outlines that our response to natural disasters is one of the clearest cases of how, when it comes to charity, we mostly follow our gut and not science. When a disaster strikes, we (and every else) think “emergency” and donate money or resources to that cause, forgetting that emergencies happen all the time around us. But we get accustomed to poverty and the fact that, every day, People die from easily preventable diseases like AIDS, malaria, or tuberculosis, which therefore receive less ongoing funding.

#3: Don’t believe everything that sounds good, or let’s bust some myths 

We very often fail to think as carefully about helping others as we could, mistakenly believing that applying data and rationality to a charitable endeavour robs the act of virtue.
And that means we pass up opportunities to make a tremendous difference.

Myth 1: Ethical Consumerism is always good and sweatshop products must be avoided

Companies in the fashion industry claim to be “sweatshop free” and other companies ask consumers to practice “ethical consumerism” = to spend more money in order to assure that workers at the factories are treated better. Now, as we’ve learned in point #1, there are five questions we must ask as an effective altruist, one being: What would have happened otherwise?

And MacAskill’s scientific research shows a painful truth: “We assume that if People refuse to buy goods from sweatshops, these factories will succumb to economic pressure and go out of business, in which case their employees will find better employment elsewhere. But that’s not true. In developing countries, sweatshop jobs are the good jobs. The alternatives are typically worse, such as backbreaking, low-paid farm labour, scavenging, or unemployment.”

By looking at this example, we have to realise that to practice effective altruism, we have to leave our “rich-world-perspective” and accept that some things unimaginable to us are better to the world than we expected. Or in this case, sweatshops are good for poor countries and if we boycott them we make People in poor countries worse off.

“We should certainly feel outrage and horror at the conditions sweatshop laborers toil under. The correct response, however, is not to give up sweatshop-produced goods in favour of domestically produced goods. The correct response is to try to end the extreme poverty that makes sweatshops desirable places to work in the first place,” says MacAskill.

Myth 2: By buying Fairtrade-certified products, we do good

Fairtrade certification is an attempt to give higher pay to workers in poor countries and has been heavily advertised as “the” solution in our western society. Producers get the certification when they meet certain criteria, such as paying workers a minimum wage, complying to safety requirements, etc. What’s less known: Most producers that can meet the criteria are from comparatively rich countries like Mexico and Costa Rica, which are ten times richer than the very poorest countries, like Ethiopia. Knowing about diminishing returns of investment, this means that we do more good buying uncertified coffee from Ethiopia than Fairtrade coffee from Costa Rica. We also should be aware that there are middlemen involved who take a share of the “Faitrade price”, or that we even don’t know how much the higher price translates into higher wages or how much money goes to the farmers who work for the Fairtrade-certified organisations. Furthermore, consistent findings indicate that Fairtrade certification does not even improve the lives of agriculture workers. Given this, there is little altruistic reason to buy Fairtrade products.

Myth 3: Buying locally does work - offsetting does not!

MacAskill states straight away that buying locally-produced goods is overhyped, as only 10% of the carbon footprint of food comes from transportation, whereas 80% comes from production. This means that WHAT type of food you buy is much more important than whether that food is produced locally or internationally.

Taking this into account, the most effective ways to cut down your emissions are:

  • To reduce your intake of meat (especially beef)
  • To reduce the amount you travel
  • To use less electricity and gas in the home

However, MacAskill also mentions that the most effective way to reduce your emissions is called offsetting: rather than reducing your own greenhouse gas emissions, you pay for projects that reduce or avoid greenhouse gas emissions elsewhere.

MacAskill explains that his organisation, Giving What We Can, studied more than 100 organisations and came to the result that Cool Earth is the most effective organisation when talking about offsetting of greenhouse gas emissions. Cool Earth uses donated money to help economically develop rainforest communities - to a point where they do better by not selling their land to loggers. This means that when you donate to Cool Earth and practice effective carbon offsetting, overall your life contributes nothing to climate change.

 

Conclusion

We conclude this blog post by answering an important question: What should you do right now?

We’ve compiled our top three suggestions:

1. Establish a habit of regular giving. GiveWell is an organisation MacAskill mentions throughout his book, and its goal is to produce the world’s top research on where to give - free and for everyone. This means you can have a look and find out which charities are the most effective right now and start giving to them on a regular basis.

2. Sign up to the effective altruism mailing list. That way you can learn more about effective altruism and about how to get involved in the community, and read stories of People putting effective altruism into practice.

3. Tell others about effective altruism. Because if you can get one person to make the same changes you make, you’ve doubled your impact.

Summary

Thirty-five years ago, author Aaron Hurst’s own uncle Marc Porat coined the term “Information Economy,” predicting the rise of Silicon Valley and the internet giants. Since that time, Hurst, CEO of Imperative and Founder of Taproot Foundation, has observed an economic shift emerging from the need for Purpose, which he terms “The Purpose Economy.” In his book, Hurst makes the case for why our economy is becoming more Purpose-driven and how organisations (including hospitality businesses and boutique hotels) can thrive in light of this shift. Hurst draws upon his experience catalysing the pro bono service market, research, case studies and personal anecdotes, to reveal how this new economy is making an impact – for people and planet!

Key Points

#1: There are different types of Purpose: Personal Purpose, Social Purpose and Societal Purpose.

Personal Purpose is the pursuit of passion; something deeply personal. As Hurst puts it, “We find Purpose when we do things we love, attempt new challenges, and express our voice to the world.” Social Purpose is about creating meaningful connections; sharing your Purpose with people you love. And research shows that Purpose is better when shared - after all, relationships provide more meaning to humans than anything else out there. Lastly, there is Societal Purpose: making a bigger impact on society as a whole. And that doesn’t mean you have to end world hunger – you can derive Societal Purpose through your existing work if you’re able to connect it to the bigger picture.

#2: There are different types of Purposeful organisations: values-driven organisations, excellence-driven organisations and impact-driven organisations.

Hurst has identified three types or Purpose-driven organisations. There is the values-driven organisation, where values are embedded into the organisation’s core and drive all decision-making. There is the organisation that strives to build excellence, where the Purpose is its craft and its focus on producing quality work. And lastly, there is the impact-driven organisation, which seeks to take responsibility for and have a more positive impact on its stakeholders, people and planet.

#3: There are different ways to embed Purpose into your organisation: through customers, through employees and through the supply chain.

Hurst notes that there are three ways in which Purpose is typically emphasised within an organisation. The first is by delivering Purpose to customers through a service or product that gives them a greater personal, social or societal Purpose. The next is by giving employees a sense of Purpose through their work. And the last approach to Purpose is building it into the supply chain - considering the people and companies with which you partner, practicing fair trade principles, empowering local communities, etc. The organisations that will perform well in this new economy are those that empower individuals to have a certain self-awareness about Purpose, and connect it to their own organisation's Purpose.

Application

How can your organisation lead with Purpose? Hurst has some recommendations:

  • Remove silos by combining functions to be in service of the larger community as a whole
  • Community organise in a way that motivates and leads people to lead themselves
  • Build community leaders by empowering and engaging your people
  • Work without managers by creating a culture of coaching and support that doesn’t require top-down hierarchy
  • Make your leaders conductors by pointing people in the right direction, instead of pushing them in the right direction

And this little phrase has had a big impact on us! It’s a mantra that’s helped us to solve our clients’ challenges, navigate COVID times and inspire our rebrand. And we try to instil it into our clients too, encouraging them to always choose the path of positivity!

The main idea behind “Everything is Figureoutable,” obviously, is that everything in life is figureoutable! Whatever it is you want to achieve, whatever that ONE thing is, there is always a way to achieve it – no matter the obstacles you face or excuses you come up with. According to Marie, it’s about training your brain to think more positively and break down any dream into manageable steps. In her book, she presents those 9 key steps to figuring out any obstacle in life, and gives the reader practical Insight to Action Challenges or exercises to help make them happen. What you’ll discover: “Everything is Figureoutable” is more than just a mentality; it’s a practical, actionable discipline to help guide you through life and achieve your one thing.

Key Steps

#1: Train your brain

To achieve results, you need to train your brain for growth by eliminating excuses, trying new things and surrounding yourself by those who inspire. And, be willing to put in the work toward achieving your one thing.

#2: Believe

Everything in life starts with a belief, so don’t be scared to believe in your dream. Because people believed in their dreams is the reason why there’s good music, nice cars, delicious restaurants – and so much more to enjoy.

#3: Eliminate excuses

You – and only you - are responsible for your life. Every time you say you can’t do something, it’s not because you actually can’t, it’s because you won’t. So get rid of the excuses.

#4: Deal with fear

Fear is only a danger when it stops you from pursuing your dream. The antidote to fear is action, because only by acting does your dream have the chance of becoming reality.

#5: Define your dream

Here’s the connection to “The One Thing”: figure out what it is you want, paint that picture in your head and never give up until you have it. 

#6: Start before you're ready

There is never a good time to start pursuing your one thing; there will always be obstacles and challenges. But again, action is the antidote to fear, so jump into the uncertainty.

#7: Aim for progress not perfection

Perfection is unattainable. Instead, focus on simply progressing, because progress puts you into a productive mindset and sets you free from the stress and burden of being perfect.

#8: Refuse to be refused

There will always be people intent on bringing you down. Don’t let them! Be the person who refuses to give up despite people telling you that you’re not talented enough, that your dream is dumb, etc.

#9: Remember the world needs your special gift

You have a special gift that no one else has, so don’t keep it from the world. Embrace your differences and use them to help change the world in a way only you can.

Proof of Purpose

Walk down the aisles of your local supermarket or scroll through Booking.com, and you’ll see: consumers have endless choices. So how do you get your brand (aka your hotel) to stand out? By connecting with them on an emotional level. By demonstrating that your hotel brand has a distinct Purpose - one that they connect with.

In its Strength of Purpose study of 8,000 global consumers, Zeno Group found that 94% of consumers say it’s important that the companies they engage with have a strong Purpose. And when they do, consumers are:

  • 4x more likely to purchase from the brand
  • 6x more likely to protect the brand in a challenging moment
  • 4.5x more likely to champion the brand with friends and family
  • 4.1x more likely to trust the brand

And there’s more compelling data out there. The Kantar Purpose 2020 study found that brands recognised for high-commitment to Purpose have grown at more than twice the rate of others. Over a period of 12 years, the brands with high perceived positive impact had a brand value growth of 175%, versus 86% for medium positive impact and 70% for low positive impact.

Path to Purpose

1. Define your Purpose

To define your hotel brand’s Purpose, bring together a diverse group of people within your hotel, across a range of departments, and ask yourselves the following question:

WHY do we exist beyond making profit? Why do we get up every morning?

Tips to a great Purpose statement:

  • Be ambitious and inspiring.
  • Be clear and coherent.
  • Be authentic and unique to your brand.

2. Embed your Purpose

What is Purpose if it’s not properly embedded into your hotel? Rhetoric. Empty promises. Bullshit.

To realise the benefits of Purpose, it’s important to build a culture around it. Identify and empower those people who are equally driven by your hotel’s WHY and allow your Purpose to guide all steps you take together.

Tips to embed your Purpose:

  • Communicate it to prospective employees.
  • Make it a part of new employee onboarding.
  • Use it as a lens for making all business decisions.
  • Build it into your KPIs.
  • Reward behaviours that reflect it.

3. Amplify your Purpose

Once your Purpose is properly infused internally, it’s time to take it external and attract those people – guests, customers, partners, etc. – who also believe what you believe. Here the goal is to inspire and spark a movement among your stakeholders, so that they’re motivated to join your hotel on the way to a more purposeful future.

  • Repeatedly refer back to it in your communications.
  • Serve as a role model and inspire through action.
  • Identify partners who can help you to accomplish it.
  • Get active in organisations and non-profits.

Key Points

#1: Don’t go big. Go small.

The common belief is that big success takes time and effort. That’s why people fill their calendars with appointments and create long to-do lists, which just leads to overload. They get lost trying to do too much, and as a result, achieve too little. The result? They settle for less or they abandon their dreams altogether. As the authors state, “Success demands singleness of purpose. You need to be doing fewer things for more effect instead of doing more things with side effects.” Think of your one thing as your “someday” goal. Once you’ve figured that out, you need to identify how many dominoes you need to line up – and then knock down – in order to achieve it.

#2: In that vein, use your time wisely.

It may surprise you, but being successful doesn’t in fact take that much discipline. The authors follow the 80/20 principle, which states that 20% of your actions will produce 80% of your results. Once you’ve decided on your one thing, then you need to identify the 20% (those “high-leverage” activities) that create the 80%. Set aside the time to focus on them – without distraction or multitasking – ideally every morning until they are done. After 66 days, which is how long it takes for a habit to kick in, this will become second-nature for you.

#3: Purpose, priority and productivity go hand-in-hand.

At MAp, we are big on purpose, so this message really resonates with us. Your one thing is your purpose, and you should use it as your guidance compass in every aspect of your life. However, purpose has the power to shape our lives only in direct proportion to the power of the priority we connect it to. As in, purpose without priority is powerless. When you’re clear about your purpose and your priorities, you become a more productive person. And - when you become more productive, you produce more value and get the success you want.

To figure out what that step is, first answer the question: What's the one thing I can do, such that by doing it, everything else will be easier or unnecessary?

Summary

Becker is a former correspondent for The New York Times, who spent five years criss-crossing the globe to measure the impact of the tourist trade. The result is “Overbooked,” part travelogue and part examination, exploring how what was once a hobby became a giant industry, employing 1 in 10 people globally and becoming the main source of income for many countries across the world. Becker looks at case studies both good and bad: eco-tourism in Costa Rica and business travel in France, to the destruction of Angkor Wat and the over-tourism plaguing Venice. The book is eye-opening in its facts and data, and makes an impassioned plea for why sustainable tourism is imperative for the future. However, after reading the book, we felt that Becker falls short of offering real solutions to the problems she observed as well as giving the reader the tools he or she needs to be a responsible traveller.

Key Points

#1: It’s easy to be blind to the effects of tourism.

Tourism is both enriching and destructive, leaving winners and losers in its wake. But most vacationers are blissfully unaware of the toll their vacation can have in moments and places on the local population and the environment at large. Why is that? Despite its size, the tourism industry is a largely neglected topic - unlike the oil or pharmaceutical industries, for example, which come under immense scrutiny from governments and the media. Instead, it is still seen as a 'soft' issue, relegated to the travel pages. Because of this, vacationers simply don’t know how to travel in the most responsible manner.

#2: Travel journalism perpetuates this problem.

Becker contends that travel journalism is compromised, serving a PR function rather than tackling the adverse effects of mass tourism. In return for free flights, stays, meals and tours, travel journalists are expected to write rave reviews and less inclined to provide critical commentary on a place. After all, not only will they not be invited back, but they may lose out on other invitations in the future. The singular goal for travel writing has been to help vacationers pursue their dream of a perfect trip.

#3: Governments can make or break a country’s tourism industry.

As Becker states, “Tourism is that rare industry whose ‘product’ is a country.” This gives governments the ultimate decision-making power. Governments can choose to “preserve cultural sites or allow them to be destroyed; they can set aside wilderness areas or issue permits to build resorts along a deserted beach...”

They are also the main sales force for tourism. Becker has found that governments that have chosen to remove themselves from the tourism business, such as the United States, which resigned from the U.S. World Tourism Organisation in 1996, have suffered as a result. France and Costa Rica, on the other hand, have taken proactive measures to protect their countries while growing their respective tourism industries.

Application

When you plan your next trip, skip the glossy magazines and really research the destination – the good, the bad, the ugly – in order to have a more well-rounded perspective of the place and better inform your buying decisions - with the goal to have the most positive impact possible. Nowadays you can rely on online resources promoting sustainable tourism, such as cooperations for hotels and accommodations that are local, green and sustainable (i.e. eco suites).

We all know, to travel sustainably is a work in progress. So, as we say at MAp, take it step-by-step. Small improvements to your travel plans and conscious decisions make all the difference over time.

Each blog post underlines a critical point: the importance of mattering to our customers. Jiwa contends that while marketing has become a necessary evil for all companies, we can look at it in other ways: marketing as solving problems, marketing as a way of seeing the world through our customers’ eyes, marketing as a means of understanding what people need and want, marketing as a way of doing better work. The bottom line: forget analytics and quick wins, seek connection before you seek results!

Key Points

#1: Don’t tell customers what you do, even if you do it really well.

The biggest mistake marketers (and product developers) can make is focusing too much on the product or service they offer and not enough on the customer. This mind-set has to change. Appreciate what your customers’ wants and needs are, and do your best to present solutions. Customers are no longer interested in what you are offering them (even if it is the best); they are interested in how your product or service makes them feel. They need to know that you understand what matters most to them.

#2: And in line with that, your competitive advantage is what your customers believe – not your product/service.

Competitive advantage is an intangible thing; it’s not about the unique feature your product offers or your cheaper rates. It’s not what you tell customers. Jiwa puts it best: “Customers don’t often pay for the actual value the product delivers. If they did, $4 cups of coffee wouldn’t exist, and people wouldn’t buy Macs even though they cost more than PCs. People pay for the intangible value, for what they experience and what they care about.”

#3: Don’t confuse awareness with impact.

In a world where it’s harder to get attention, gaining mind share is a priority for every company. The misconception is that if you can get a few more people to know about your company, you’ll be set. But instead, better to approach it by thinking, why will one person care that you are there in the first place? As Jiwa states, “What’s more important than building awareness is what you plan to do with it once you’ve got it, because top of mind is not the same thing at all as close to heart.”

#4: Don’t fear the competition, be the competition.

Companies obsess too often about what the competition is doing. Instead, channel this obsession to your customers. Obsess over what your customers are doing and then determine how you could help them do it with more ease. According to Jiwa: “Becoming the competition doesn’t always mean using the same old rules to beat others at their own game. Focusing on the tiniest gap in your customers’ desires might be a better strategy.” The message: act as if you are a market of one.

#5: Sell your story.

It’s not difficult to come up with a great idea. But it is, however, difficult to articulate clearly why that great idea should matter to the right people. As a place to start, simply fill in the blanks: “We do _________ so that you can do/feel/be _________.”

Whether creating products or services, or marketing products or services, always ask yourself one critical question:

Why should your customer care about this?

You need to give people a reason to stop and listen to your song.

In 2021, we introduced our book club, where we dissect inspiring and insightful books and look at how they can be applied to our professional, and sometimes even, our personal lives too. One of our favourite books so far? “Nonviolent Communication: A Language of Life” by Marshall Rosenberg, which seemed like a particularly relevant pick considering today’s divisive and tense climate.

This book is relevant for any and all hoteliers and managers who interact with people (= everyone) – be it clients, partners and team members. It had a profound impact on our team, and we’re sharing it here with you, our readers, so that you will be encouraged to read it and practice nonviolent communications in your everyday lives too.

Summary

Rosenberg, an American psychologist, developed and coined the term “Nonviolent Communication” (NVC), which is a theory of communication that teaches people to express themselves clearly and honestly, while being respectful, empathic and focusing on what is being said as opposed to diagnosing or judging; or, as Rosenberg puts it simply, “a way of communicating that leads us to give from the heart.” He contends that, for centuries, people have been taught to speak and think in ways that can in fact perpetuate pain, conflict or even violence. This is where NVC comes in: to reduce these issues, build trust, strengthen relationships and promote peace – one interaction at a time. Through useful anecdotes, inspiring stories and practical exercises, Rosenberg introduces a framework for NVC and shows us how to authentically express ourselves in any type of heated situation (internally, in business, in relationships and more).

Key Points

#1: In order to be successful at NVC, we must focus on four key components: observations, feelings, needs and requests.

The process of NVC is as follows: 1) Observing a situation, 2) recognising the feelings that this situation awakens, 3) identifying what needs are connected to those feelings, and lastly, 4) looking at what we can ask for to satisfy those needs. When used in a sentence: “When ___, I feel ___, because I am needing ___. Therefore, I would now like ___.”

To practice NVC is to express these four components verbally (or by other means), but also to receive the same four areas of information from others. That is to say, sensing what they are observing, feeling, needing and requesting so that we can determine how we can best help them. When we use this process, we create a flow of communication that leads to compassion from both sides.

#2: When there is an emotional response to a situation, it's always based on an unmet need, so don’t be quick to judge or blame.

Judging or blaming someone is the worst thing we can do if we want them to listen or change their behaviour. Instead, Rosenberg suggests a foundational habit for NVC: that we learn to separate observations from judgments or blame, keeping our observations objective and neutral.

Better yet, understanding others’ behaviours as manifestations of their unmet needs helps to humanize conflicts and create empathy. And if we show empathy and true understanding for one’s needs, we’re likely to receive a respectful response to our requests of them.

#3: Connection to self (being at home with our own feelings and needs), enables us to form better connections with others and thereby become better communicators.

According to Rosenberg, NVC’s most important use may be in developing self-compassion. As he states, “When we are internally violent towards ourselves, it is difficult to be genuinely compassionate towards others.” Therefore, it is important to employ NVC in our own moment-to-moment evaluation of ourselves in a way that helps us to learn, grow and make decisions that serve us – rather than turning to self-hatred. By being better in tune with ourselves and assessing our behaviours in terms of our unmet needs, not only can we cultivate self-compassion, but we can better communicate our requests of others and thus be better communicators.

Application

While NVC can be applied to any aspect of one ‘s life, let’s look at how it can be utilised in the world of business (we are consultants after all).

  • Sales + Marketing: An NVC approach to Sales + Marketing is listening to your target audience and letting them know how you can meet their needs and make their lives more enriching. This should be nothing new!
  • Money: When evaluating an incoming offer, whether it be for a product, service or salary, ask yourself, “does this amount work for me in relation to my needs, or my business in relation to its needs?” 
  • Stress Management + Team-Building: There is a lot of stress in the business world. Therefore, feelings and needs awareness, of self and others (aka showing empathy), is crucial to stress management and creating a productive working environment.

In his book, Simon Sinek teaches an important lesson that all business leaders should know: in order to be successful, you must lead with your why. In this 250-page book, Sinek answers the question: why are some people and organisations more innovative, more influential, and more profitable than others? He looks at the evolutionary reasons behind human behaviour, draws on real-life stories and points to examples of some of history’s most inspiring leaders who have been driven by their why (think Steve Jobs and the Wright Brothers). Additionally, Sinek provides a clear and proven framework for how people and companies can become more purposeful in what they do. This book is therefore perfect for anyone who wants to inspire others and have long-term success with their businesses.

Key Points

#1: Why is more powerful than what or how.
Why you do something is more important than either what you do or how you do it. It’s those products or services that are infused with and based on the why of a company that are more successful than those that are based on the what or how. Therefore, the world’s most influential and inspired leaders lead with the why (belief), follow that with the how (actions) and then address the what (products, services, etc.). All must be in harmony in order to be a truly authentic brand. This is demonstrated by The Golden Circle, a framework upon which organisations should be built.

#2: To have real impact and garner loyalty, you need to consistently communicate your why.
It’s critical that you consistently communicate and refer back to your higher purpose, cause, or belief as part of your messaging. Those with similar values will be able to relate to, buy into and align with the greater cause you are pursuing. As a result, your message will have a more lasting mass market success, as it is vision and charisma that ultimately attract innovators and early adopters (aka those people who will pay a premium and be loyal to you in the long-run).

When your why is clear, those who have the same belief can help you bring your cause to life and make it a lasting success.

#3: Inspiration is more effective at influencing human behaviour than manipulation.
Manipulative techniques are often used in sales and marketing. These can include dropping the price, running a promotion, using scarcity or peer pressure to get people to buy, etc. Manipulative strategies come at a cost (especially when you lower prices) and do not result in long-term success.

On the other hand, inspiration talks directly to the limbic brain, which is the section of the brain responsible for feelings and that controls decision-making. It is your limbic brain that is more powerful and drives your behaviour.

Application

In order to apply the principles set out in this book and find your why, answer the following fundamental question:

Why do you exist beyond making profit?

Put the answer to that question at the very centre of The Golden Circle. From there, address the how and what: how do you do what you do? How is it different or better than others? What do you do?

With the answers to these questions, you’ll be able to determine what makes you unique, who can support you and bring your vision to life, what products and services you can offer, and more. But do take heed – ensure your answers always touch back to and are consistent with your overall why.
