You’re visible on Google? But ChatGPT runs on Bing

And there, your hotel might not exist

One technical fact quietly decides whether the world’s most-used AI can see your hotel. Almost no hotelier knows it.

Most hotels pour their attention into Google, and reasonably so. But there is one fact about how AI works that changes the picture completely, and almost no independent hotelier has been told it!

Google versus Bing

When ChatGPT browses the web to recommend a hotel, it doesn’t use Google. It uses Bing’s index (OpenAI search partnership with Microsoft). So a hotel can be perfectly visible on Google and completely invisible inside ChatGPT – the tool hundreds of millions of people now use every week. Two search engines, two different pictures of your hotel, and you have probably only ever tended to one of them.

The question is: is your hotel one of them?

isn't AI visibility yet.

Bing has become the substrate under the AI

For years the industry treated Bing as the search engine you could safely ignore. In 2026 that is an expensive mistake. Bing is the substrate ChatGPT runs on. Every time a traveller asks ChatGPT for "a boutique hotel with ocean views," it is quietly querying Bing’s index, not Google’s.

Let the right robots in

There is a second, quieter trap. Some hotels unintentionally block the AI crawlers in their site settings – and if the crawler can’t read your site, nothing else you do matters. To be visible to ChatGPT, your site needs to allow the GPTBot and OAI-SearchBot crawlers, and be server-rendered and indexable. You can test your live pages in Bing Webmaster Tools, which is free, and which launched an AI performance view in early 2026 that is the closest proxy for ChatGPT visibility that exists.

The point

Being visible on Google is not the same as being visible to AI. ChatGPT runs on Bing, so a hotel that has never claimed Bing Places or checked its crawler settings can be entirely absent from the answer at the exact moment a guest is choosing. It is fixable, often quickly – but only once you know to look.

Our AI Visibility Coaching checks exactly this – including your Bing presence, your crawlability, and the four other areas AI reads – and hands you a prioritised plan. No jargon, no tool to buy, just clarity you keep.
